"Smith sets out to turn the improbable into the incredible, and succeeds." --Jim Hatlo, Frets Magazine

"This is the kind of album that you're going to listen to in ten years and still be picking up nuances."  --Dan Maher, Inland Folk, Northwest Public Radio

Thanks for visiting!

I'm a musician living on the Washington-Idaho border, playing the string music of America and Ireland, mostly on the fiddle these days.  I compose, produce, and record music, and sometimes build musical instruments.  I also play gourd banjo (and any other kind of banjo), along with a fleet of stringed instruments--piano, guitar, mandolin, al'ud, rubab, krar... You can download my published research on African-American banjo music and Gottschalk, as well as free tablature/notation for banjo by going to "downloads," above.  And there's lots of music to listen to in "music," including a bunch of tracks I've produced for others--a pretty wide range!

I am available for commissions, concerts, lecture/concerts, recording/producing, and I can play a solid evening of contra dance fiddle music.
